ABOUT CHRISTINA
Christina Chammas was born in Detroit, Michigan and earned a BFA in Dance from Wayne State University before moving to Chicago in 2016. Her choreography has been showcased at the Michigan Dance Festival, Going Dutch Festival, J e l l o at Links Hall, and more. She is currently a member of dropshift dance. Christina was commissioned as the 2019 Alumni Choreographer in Residence at Wayne State University. Christina's choreographic works are reflections of her lived experiences as a woman, a person of color, and a queer person. Her work is driven by a fascination with the passing of time and memory. Christina views her art as an extension of herself, and finds joy in the ability to connect and share a part of herself with others.
ABOUT CHRISTINA’S WORK
This work is an autobiography. It’s a prayer. And a poem. It’s a therapy session. . . It’s being 8 years old and singing children’s rhymes with your grandma on her carpeted floor. It’s being 11 in the car with your Jeddo unconsciously memorizing the scent of his cigarettes. It’s hoping no one in school asks you why you have a boy’s name for a middle name because all Lebanese men name their children after themselves, even their daughters. It’s your first big fight with your mom at 17 after coming out to her. It’s an existential breakdown. And the recovery. It’s a pause. . . It’s being tethered to this thing called dance for longer than you can remember and worrying you’re actually only doing this for other people. It’s unresolved feelings. . . it is finding joy. It’s for LGBTQIA+ art makers that I love and admire. It’s a letter to people I used to know and people I never knew but love. It’s about what I’m saying and what I’m sharing and what I’m making visible which I’m pretty sure is just that I am here.
